The immigration is an up-to-date phenomenon with a long history. The world has always known it. Usually people immigrate for pragmatic reasons: they want to have more secured life, higher income, enjoy more developed economy and more intensive life in modern industrialized countries. Merely not all countries accept immigrants with a warm welcome. Some, on contrary, attempt to legalize their status as quick as possible and to provide immigrants with basic rights. Such countries as the USA, Spain, Poland, Norway and many others experienced what historians call multiple waves of immigration.
Success or failure: what immigration really brings for welcoming countries
Many books, journal articles and interviews present immigration as a traumatic process. Incoming people have much to overcome: legal procedures, entering the local market, adaptation to the new culture. The countries that accept immigrants always negotiate conditions. Some political decision-makers, mainly those who are populists, lobby the laws that make immigrants’ path in a new country even harder. The very lucid example is Trump’s latest policies and his showing speech calling immigrants ‘vicious snakes’. Fortunately, other representatives of political arena perceive immigrants differently.
So, is immigration that harmful as sometimes it is presented by politicians of radical views? The truth it is not. It is not a merely guess or subjective opinion but a well-calculated position, that does not lack argumentation. Immigration, if perceived right, can give immense benefits to the countries that accept immigrants. First of all, immigrants bring additional labor to the local market and very often new unique knowledge in various spheres of life as well. There is also one important trait that these people have: they can adapt, what is indispensable to work in a globalized world. Immigrants per se are the people that underwent the stress of moving. Those, who adapted well in the new country, gain important intercultural competences.
The globalization, that became the main underlying strategy of development for past decades, presumes that immigration only brings advantages. Moreover, it is beneficial for the human development that people move to experience life in new countries. The politicians of today should facilitate the process of adaptation for immigrants. They should cherish them and develop strong social programs for their smooth incorporation into local societies. Immigrants enrich the culture they get to live in. They diversify the local communities.
Immigration is also the preliminary condition for sustainable development of today’s world. It ensures the world is without borders and people care only about prosperity and well-being of each other regardless any social or political constraints. So, it is the role of politicians to improve national politics as international political players should ameliorate international law to protect human dignity, rights and freedoms of people in any corner of the world.
Immigration needs branding! It will make every person understand that it is not a threat but rather an advantage to welcome people of different origins in their countries. Life should know no boundaries! We should fight for the right to move freely!
